ASUU plans to end strike Jan 2014 — UNILAG faction

The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) is planning to end the ongoing five-month strike mid-January next year, a faction of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter alleged on Monday.
The faction, however, insisted that the closure of Nigerian universities by the lecturers must end this week.

Leader of the faction, Dr Adeyemi Daramola, a lecturer in the Department of English, Faculty of Arts accused the body of assuming oracular posture on the strike.
According to him, “The position of ASUU has not demonstrated original function of its rules which says “reports on agreement from the union universities’ branches should be collated and announced”.
“ASUU-NEC has assumed an oracular posture by its very poor communication to members, government and the Nigerian society.

“The target of ASUU is to call off the strike by mid-January of 2014 which is no longer a rumour in the domain of its members. We have postponed other meetings of this pressure version of UNILAG
ASUU to discuss issues and shall call a new one if ASUU-NEC fails to suspend the strike before the end off the week.
“If necessary, we shall take all legitimate steps to ensure that normalcy is restored to all the Nigerian universities as soon as possible, as the group would not accept the rumour of a resumption date fixed for January, 2014. About two universities’ academic calendar have been wasted on strike, including lecturers’ four months salaries lost.”

Controversies have continued to trail the participation of UNILAG’s chapter of the union, with the new faction allegedly creating uproar at the congress held in the institution yesterday.
Another leader of the anti-strike faction, Dr Michael Ogbeide of the History Department told the Nigerian Tribune on phone that “the ASUU strike had become nonsense and must be stopped. A lot of our members also believe so but are afraid to speak out.”

He assured that the faction would keep pressurising the leadership until the strike is called off.
When asked the next line of action if UNILAG ASUU leadership did not accede to the faction’s request, he said “as an historian, in war, you don’t divulge your strategy before hand.”
Early on Monday morning, there were rumours that the Unilag ASUU had decided to withdraw from the strike, but this was debunked by some members of the union, though it was confirmed that there was a split among the members, with Daramola’s faction reportedly kicking against the institution’s continued participation in the strike.

According to a source who pleaded anonymity, the congress actually turned out disorganised and divided, as some members, during the meeting began to protest, demanding UNILAG’s withdrawal from the strike.
It was learnt that after the meeting became rowdy, the two factions later held separate meetings, with both reportedly resolving to maintain their postures.
The main body insisted that the strike would be on until grey areas are sorted out.

Nigeria’s disintegration might become a reality – Ngige

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Chief Emeka Ngige has warned that Nigeria’s disintegration as a country was gradually becoming a reality emanating from the manner political affairs are being conducted in the country..

Speaking on the heels of the irregularities that marred the Nov 16 Anambra State governorship election which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared inconclusive, Ngige stated that the best option open for  INEC was outright cancellation of the entire election which he said was characterized by all forms of unacceptable election standards.

He warned that if INEC goes ahead to conduct the November 30 supplementary election in the state, the election umpire would be setting a precedent for speedy disintegration of Nigeria in 2015.

According to the Ngige, “Nigeria should be ready to accept the US prediction that the country would disintegrate in 2015 going by the seeming outcome of Anambra governorship election”.

The legal icon further declared: “INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega has admitted that he failed in Anambra. It would happen in 2015 presidential election when INEC is expected to declare Presidential results in favour of President Goodluck Jonathan and that would mark the end of Nigeria as a united country.”.

He dismissed the acceptance of the initial “faulty” results by a section of the traditional rulers in the State implying that some of them were “cash and carry” traditional rulers who have lost their conscience and values because of monetary gains.

He accused President Jonathan and Jega for preparing the ground to impose Obiano as governor on the people of the state, adding,.Jega is trying to emulate jos predecessor, Prof. Maurice Iwu, but it can not stand the test of time. as Obiano would be kicked out in three months as there are weighty evidences against him”.

Ngige who expressed immense sadness over INEC “dirty” role in Anambra election, contended that Jega has not only disappointed Anambra people, but the entire Nigerians who had thought he was a better referee than Iwu and warned that if the country burns, Jega and his INEC commissioners should be held responsible.

He added that the only option left for Jega and his INEC was to cancel the entire Anambra governorship election and fix a date for fresh one as major opposition parties had already expressed their willingness to boycott the Nov 30 supplementary episode.

ASUU’s demands outrageous, says minister

ASUU’s demands outrageous, says minister

University teachers are seeking audience with President Goodluck Jonathan.
They delivered yesterday a letter containing the request to the Supervising Minister for Education, Chief. Nyesom Wike.
Also, top leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), led by National President, Dr. Nasir Issa Fagge, converged yesterday on Abuja for the last stage of discussions with the Federal Government.
The leaders were awaiting the President’s invitation on the three conditions they tabled for the almost five -month strike to be called off.
The conditions are:
• commitment from the President that any review or reconsideration or renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement will not substantially affect the Agreement which is the cause of the ongoing strike;
• immediate payment of all outstanding salary arrears and allowances of varsity teachers without victimisation; and
•a written commitment from the President that the Federal Government will commit N225billion annually to the funding of universities for the next four years.
ASUU’s letter was delivered to the Minister through its Liaison Officer in Abuja.
But the minister has described the demand as outrageous.
Wike said: “I will have to see Mr. President to see how the government can go about this development, which is not favourable. It is outrageous. ASUU is now making fresh demands and this will definitely need further discussion.”
In the letter, the union demanded that it would want the last tranche of the negotiation with the Federal Government to be witnessed by President of the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) Abduwaheed Omar and Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN).
A top source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, said ASUU leaders were determined to see that any agreement with the Federal Government has legal binding.
The source said: “ASUU leaders are not ready to take anything for granted this time around; every clause in whatever is agreed upon will have legal effect on the two parties.
“This is why ASUU leaders have asked for the NLC President and the AGF to be present. They do not want a situation where the government will deny such agreement in the near future.
“It was amazing how the government had been faulting the 2009 Agreement, which it was part of. This shows that ASUU must be extremely careful.”
There were indications also that the Federal Government was also firming up its position on the conditions set by ASUU.
A Presidency source said: “The government is also weighing options on the demands of ASUU especially the aspects relating to financial commitment.
“You know, what the government spends has to depend on what it earns. If there is a binding financial commitment and there is global recession in the oil industry, will government now look for money at all cost?
“This is one grey area of the pending agreement on which the two parties must reach a compromise.”
A source close to ASUU however said varsity students may stay at home till next year when the government will be ready to meet the union’s demand.
The source said the government’s plan is to deceive ASUU into calling off the strike and still not implement the 2009 agreement.
“ASUU will not chicken out of its fight. The death of Iyayi has further deepened our resolve to ensure that government implements the 2009 agreement. This fight is for the university community and not for ASUU. Many people are insinuating that we are fighting for the 2009 to be implemented to favour ASUU. They can say whatever they like that will not deter us.
”Government knows what to do. But people in the same government are mismanaging public funds which can be used to implement the said FG/ASUU agreement. Many of us at the ASUU session at Mambayya House in Kano resolved that government must meet the 2009 agreement.”
Wike yesterday condemned new conditions which the union insists must be met before a truce could be achieved.
Wike spoke during his meeting with Commissioners of Education in Abuja.
He confirmed that ASUU had given new conditions to call off the strike.
The Minister at the meeting with the commissioners assured them of the readiness of the Federal Government to support state governments in the development of education.

Thematic Photographic 270 - In the foreground

This old barn
Woodstock, ON
June 2013
I'm a sucker for ruined architecture, and fortunately I live in a part of the world that doesn't suffer from any shortage of it. The country roads that ring London are filled with so many examples of houses and barns that have lost their battle with the elements yet, for reasons I'll never understand, remain in place as reminders that nothing lasts forever.

As I pulled up to this particular barn, I realized getting a clear shot would be a bit of a challenge, as the roadside ditch was impassable. The flat, grey light wasn't doing me any favors, either, and the tall wild grasses sealed the deal. So I improvised a little and tried some different framing/composition approaches.

I didn't exactly make lemonade out of lemons, but I salvaged something out of an otherwise cruddy day with lousy sight lines. Maybe it's an allegory for life, that we shouldn't be disappointed when the script gets changed on our behalf by forces we can't even minutely control.

Whatever the case, I thought it would make for a fun Thematic theme. It's called in the foreground, and I hope you're into it.

Your turn: Take a pic that evokes this week's theme - specifically, with something prominently in the foreground. Share it on your blog or website, then leave a comment here letting folks know where to find it. Visit other participants to spread the photographic joy and learning, and feel free to share more photos as the week wears on. If you're new to the Thematic thing, click here and all will be explained. Have fun with it!

Shocking! Angola Bans Islam

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

Culled from onislam.net

According to several Angolan newspapers, Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims, taking first measures by destroying mosques in the country.

“The process of legalization of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, their mosques would be closed until further notice,”
Rosa Cruz e Silva, the Angolan Minister of Culture, was quoted by Agence Ecofin on Friday, November 22. Silva's comments were given during her visit last Tuesday to the 6th Commission of the National Assembly.

She asserted that the decision was the latest is a series of efforts to ban ‘illegal’ religious sects.

According to the minister, the action was necessary to fight relentlessly against the emergence of congregations whose worshipping is contradicting with the customs of the Angolan culture.

Same as Islam, other faiths which were not legalized will face closure of their houses of worship.

No rigging in Anambra election – Obi

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
No rigging in Anambra election – ObiAnambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on Monday declared that there was no rigging in the state governorship election held on November 16.

Speaking with State House correspondent at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, he maintained that the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate will win the election if it is conducted 10 separate times in the state.
He said: “Let me tell you, in the election in Anambra State, I can go to anywhere as a Christian and tell you there was no rigging in the election. Those who wanted to rig were prevented from rigging and they are crying.
“Go to the people of Anambra State, if you repeat that election 10 times, they will never win. What are they even talking about cancellation? The regulation, the rules or the law says that you have to win at least 25 per cent in two-third of the local governments. Only APGA can boast of that, we won in 18 local governments.
“The nearest, which is the Peoples Democratic Party, won in nine local governments, the All Progressive Congress won seven. And I can tell you that even those results they are shouting about their own are even more doubtful. Everything for APGA is real.
“I cannot be part of rigging, I don’t have money to pay for people. You know those who spent money and I am not one of them.”

For one last Thematic drink, click here
Years ago, I started a tradition when I travel for work. It involved taking pictures of whatever I was eating, drinking, seeing or doing, then sharing the photos with my kids.

It helped bridge the distance a bit, and helped them better understand why I had to be away every once in a while. It also helped me, because it gave me a reflective moment in the middle of an otherwise chaotic trip where I could quietly sit down and think of them.

Even now, I try to stick closer to home if I can get away with it. But on the odd occasion where I find myself in a car, train or plane, it usually doesn't take too long before the camera comes out. And on this cold winter's day somewhere over Canada's Rocky Mountains, I found myself drinking apple juice, and it didn't take long before the camera found its way into my hand. For some odd reason, apple juice has been a recurring theme, and I can't even begin to explain why.

Your turn: What's your favorite drink? Why?

One more thing: Stay tuned for the next Thematic theme, in the foreground, which we'll launch tonight at 7 p.m. Eastern. If you want to throw in a last-minute drink-themed pic, feel free to head here (it's always a good time, after all.) Enjoy.
