Shocking! Angola Bans Islam

Posted by Unknown Senin, 25 November 2013 0 komentar

Culled from onislam.net

According to several Angolan newspapers, Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims, taking first measures by destroying mosques in the country.

“The process of legalization of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, their mosques would be closed until further notice,”
Rosa Cruz e Silva, the Angolan Minister of Culture, was quoted by Agence Ecofin on Friday, November 22. Silva's comments were given during her visit last Tuesday to the 6th Commission of the National Assembly.

She asserted that the decision was the latest is a series of efforts to ban ‘illegal’ religious sects.

According to the minister, the action was necessary to fight relentlessly against the emergence of congregations whose worshipping is contradicting with the customs of the Angolan culture.

Same as Islam, other faiths which were not legalized will face closure of their houses of worship.

ASUU Agrees to Call Off Strike, Gives conditions as they Meet with FG Today

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 24 November 2013 0 komentar

VARSITY teachers have agreed to suspend their five months old strike, The Nation learnt yesterday.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given three conditions to be tabled before President Goodluck Jonathan today. If the terms are acceptable to the Federal Government, the union will call off the strike.
The ASUU leadership has banned its local chapters and zonal chairmen from talking to the media until after the session with the President.
ASUU President Dr. Nasir Issa Fagge and other leaders of the union were being expected in Abuja last night.
According to a source, who was part of the ASUU session at Mambayya House in Kano, the conditions are: •commitment from the President that any review or reconsideration or renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement will not substantially affect the pact which is the cause of the ongoing strike;
•immediate payment of all outstanding salary arrears and allowances of varsity teachers without victimization; and
•a written commitment from the President that the Federal Government will commit N225billion annually to the funding of universities for the next four years.
There is a fourth condition, which is said to be “personal” to ASUU, bordering on the need to be wary of gradual loss of public sympathy.
The union leaders were said to have recognised public goodwill for the strike and the need to avert any action that could erode such confidence.
The source said: “Our leaders are meeting with the President on Monday to table these conditions. Once the President accepts these three terms, the strike will be called off.
“In principle, members voted about 60-40 per cent to call off the strike, but they added a caveat – that ASUU leaders should extract a commitment (signed and sealed) from the President.
The union is said to have insisted on the three conditions because during talks with the Federal Government, it was apparent that the government wanted a renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement.
“If ASUU had accepted to renegotiate the entire Agreement , it means there will be no basis for the ongoing strike. The worst that can happen is either having the abridged version of the 2009 Agreement or a phased implementation of the document,” the source added.
The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State became at the weekend the third institution to break ranks with the striking union.
It asked its students to return to the campus today. Lecture are to start on December 2, according to the Registrar, Mr. Bamidele Olotu.
Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT), Enugu, and the Ibrahim Badamosi University, Lapai, in Niger State had earlier directed the reopening of the schools.
The registrar directed students to begin their registration on the school portal immediately.
AAUA Student Union President Julius Adeniyi welcomed the resumption plan and assured his fellow students of a hitch-free semester.
He said: “We are dying and wasting away our time at home; and I am backing my Vice Chancellor on the resumption date. We are coming in and nothing will happen.”

ASUU NEC Meeting Outcome: Strike Might be called Off This Week

Prospects of university students resuming for academic activities this week appear to be in sight, as the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) met at the Bayero University, Kano (BUK), at the weekend. Although details of their resolutions are still sketchy as at press time, a reliable source told Sunday Independent that the executive members of the union held their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Kano on Friday, to take some resolutions concerning their strike which began on July 2, nationwide.
The ASUU official, who preferred to anonymity, confirmed that the meeting took place at BUK, as earlier reported in the Monday, November 18 edition of Daily Independent.
He told our correspondent on phone that the meeting was in connection with their protracted strike and modalities to bring it to an end within the shortest possible time.
He said part of the agenda tabled for discussion at the NEC also included ways in which ASUU can contribute to the burial of the late Festus Iyayi, who died in a motor accident along Lokoja-Abuja road recently.
Asked if the strike would be suspended after the meeting, he simply said that appears to be a reality, but it might be called off later this week.
The ASUU strike, which has grounded academic activities in all the nation’s universities, has lingered on for almost five months now.
“Well, the NEC meeting is going on right now in Kano, but we are yet to come up with a resolution.
“Tentatively, the strike might be called off next week, going by the level of discussion here at the NEC,” he stated.
ASUU officials had earlier met with President Goodluck Jonathan, following the protracted nature the strike had assumed.
The Presidency was said to have intervened by pledging to inject N1.1trillion into the university system to address lingering challenges within the next five years.
President of ASUU, Nasir Fagge, and his team, after the meeting with the President, were to convene their NEC meeting on Wednesday November 13, when the accident that claimed Iyayi’s life on Tuesday November 12 occurred, while on their way to Kano.
The development had forced ASUU to suspend its NEC, and elicited diverse reactions from Nigerians since then.

ASUU NEC MEETING: Again, ASUU leaders meet, set to suspend strike

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 22 November 2013 0 komentar

National President, ASUU, Nasir Issa-Faggae
There is strong indication that academic activities may resume in the nation’s public universities early next week, Saturday Punch has gathered.
Our correspondent gathered on Friday that members of the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of the Universities again converged on Kano to deliberate on whether to call off their over four months old industrial action or not.
The NEC members, who gathered at the Bayero University, Kano, penultimate week to review the reports of the various university congresses over the strike, suspended the meeting following the death of Dr. Festus Iyayi. Iyayi, a University of Benin lecturer and former ASUU president, who died in an auto accident involving the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada, on his way to Kano to attend the NEC meeting.
There has been no date yet for the interment of his remains.
However, feelers from Kano on Friday indicated that the ASUU members went into hiding for the meeting.
One of our correspondents gathered that the NEC members, who reconvened in BUK, on Thursday, retired to a secret location for the meeting.
Reporters made frantic efforts to trace the venue of the meeting without success.
But many vehicles belonging to the members of the union were seen on campus.
But a member of ASUU NEC, who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the development, confirmed to our correspondent that the union leaders were converging on Kano for the meeting.
According to him, though the union has lost a leading member and an academic, they were mindful of the feelings of the students and the public over the protracted industrial action.
He noted that all the union’s national officers as well as other branch chairmen had arrived at the ancient city for the assembly.
However, attempts by our correspondent on Friday evening to reach out to the University of Lagos chapter ASUU Chairman, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka, to confirm the meeting failed, as he did not pick his calls.
He also did not respond to the text message sent to his telephone.
Ogbinaka had earlier said the academic community was mourning Iyayi and so was not in a hurry to fix a new date for the NEC meeting.
The telephone line of the union’s National President, Dr.Nassir Fagge, also did not go through.
President Goodluck Jonathan had led a Federal Government team that met with the leadership of the union penultimate week.
Following the discussion, the FG reportedly promised to inject N220bn yearly into the public universities for the next five years. The new offer is to begin from 2014.
A majority of the chapters of the union had agreed on the suspension of the strike following the fresh commitment the leadership of ASUU obtained from the FG.
Teachers in the nation’s three but 78 public universities embarked on strike on July 1, 2013 to protest the failure of the FG to implement the agreement they signed with the authorities in 2009.
The pact largely centered on greater funding of the universities, a declaration of a state of emergency in tertiary education, better wages as well as payment of earned allowances to lecturers.

Tonto Dikeh Tops the List as the Sexiest Lady in Nollywood

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The battle for the last 5 is as tricky as gunning for the ultimate crown. Sooner or later, many favourites would have to see the exit door, as painful as it is, it is an inevitability that cannot be avoided. It is the name of the game: there will be losers and winners.

Now, we have witnessed another dramatic week of surprises, intrigues and pure bravado. The set-up we had last week isn’t what have shaped out this week. There has been a number of changes:

Tonto Dikeh: After having been shocked and stunned by Stephanie Okereke last week, the controversial actress and singer is back on top, fighting tooth and nail to claw her way back to the top.

sexiest10a

Stephanie Okekere: She gain the first spot last week but overdone again by Tonto’s bravado to reclaim her spot. She has only lost a few steps and stands on good ground to fight all the way.

Ebube Nwagbo: All attention is on Tonto and Stephanie, running the race neck to neck and nobody is watching how dangerously close Ebube is getting to the duo. She remains restive on 3rd but closer to the first two stronger than ever.

Yvonne Nelson: Yvonne still has her hand on the 4th spot but not without a challenge from Colette who is running wild at 5th. Here, is another duo that may be worth watching.

Colette Orji: Ever since Colette has been able to out-muscled Angela Okorie on the 5th spot she seems to have develop some sort of belief and she is pushing higher than ever.

Cynthia Agholor: I said Cynthia has remained in the game only because she has learnt to play the game with the ruthlessness it demands. This week, she was simply outstanding and too hot to handle as she leapfrogged two spots to jump to six.

Queeneth Hilbert: Just like Cynthia, Queeneth too has demonstrated some ruthlessness to remain in the game. The duo were very much at each other’s throats this week, bundling their way into the next positions.

Angela Okoria: What could be said of Angela, a lacklustre outing in the last couple of weeks have seen her lots plummeted. Her fighting spirit seems to be all-time low.
Men

Yul Edochie: Even though Ramsey and Benson are doing the best they could, the guy continues to make them look like they aren’t trying hard enough, or are they?

Ramsey Nouah: This top actor will need to do more than just sitting around, hoping the game will cheer him on. With more outing like he has been having the last couple of weeks, Benson might just be given the right of way he has been honking for.

Benson Okonkwo: Benson continues to push but the harder he pushes the more Uti seems to be enjoying the sight of him. He is still doing fine at third and probably having a look into second. With a couple of weeks to go, anything can happen.

Uti Nwachukwu: Uti has been asking questions for sometime now and right now he seems to be getting some answers. He took advantage of Pope’s lacklustre week to upstage him and here he is on 4th and looking to do more damage.

Pope Odowondo: Pope was having a bit of a wrestle with Benson until Benson got other ideas, leaving Pope behind and now it seems it’s not only Benson that will leave him, even Uti has his pound of flesh. He is 5th now.

sexiest10

Odunlade Adekola: It was a huge week for Odunlade Adekola who moved three places to clinch the 6th place, taking off Van Vicker, Ali Nuhu and Frank Artus. He has been blowing hot and cold too but this week was his hottest to date.

Mike Ezuruonye: For Mike, it has become a never ending story of eviction that never happened. He was the last man of the last ten yet he survived. Then he was the last ninth man expected to go out last week and again he didn’t. Now he sits on 7th, stunning Frank, and Ali Nuhu

Ali Nuhu: Ali too is a specimen capable of anything. We have seen much of that in this quest to rule him out just yet.

Naira Notes to be changed back to Paper Money before June 2014 — CBN

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has said that Nigerians should expect a new generation of naira notes before the second quarter of 2014.
Deputy Governor, Operations, Mr Tunde Lemo, said the apex bank had earlier announced its decision to move the local currency from polymer back to paper, but disclosed that all the notes in circulation would not be withdrawn at the same time.
“Nigerians will be having new generation notes in paper in the next few months. We will wait until the notes wear tear. When they wear, and they travel back to Central Bank, of course they will be re-issued,” he stated.
According to him, the life cycle of a note in Nigeria is between six months and a year and if CBN took that decision six months ago, “I reckon that in the next three to six months, you will begin to see these denominations re-appear in paper.”
He said that, the Central Bank would have started producing the lower denomination notes in paper by the middle of last year, but due to logistics challenges, the plan was not accomplished.
“My plea is that Nigerians should be patient with us. It wasn’t the fault of the CBN; it is just because we have to go back to the drawing board. We will correct that in the course of the year. Polymer certainly will be phased out. In fact, no new note is being printed in polymer now,” said Lemo.
On the scarcity of the lower denomination notes, Lemo blamed inflation and commercial banks for what he called “low transactionary value” and “poor circulation,” respectively.
“For the lower denomination, well, I think the banks are really the ones that are really not allowing the lower denomination in circulation, largely, because of the cost and carrying value.
“Most people don’t require small denomination. But for buying things in the market, if you look at the veracity, you find out that it is the people that are losing interest because of its bulkiness and inflation,” he said.
Lemo said this should be done to ensure effective protection of the currency from abuse.
