UNN Graduate Wins Gulder Ultimate Search, Gets N10m

Twenty-year old graduate of Electronics Engineering from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Daniel Okike, has emerged winner of the 10th edition of the Gulder Ultimate Reality Show.

With the victory, the Abia State native has won N10m and a brand new Mitsubishi Pajero.

The guy that had initially said he intended to establish a successful international import and export business outsmarted Edmund Umeabuani and Ifunanya Onike in the waters of the Usaka River, where the battle for the ultimate symbol held.

But it is a fair story for Onike, too, as she is the Last Female Standing, winning an added one million naira.

Also, a final year student of Industrial Mathematics in the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Kalu Kalu, emerged the first winner of the first ever fans edition of the Gulder Ultimate Search.

Kalu also won a brand new Mitsubishi Pajero 3.0L GLX MT, courtesy of CFAO Motors, the automotive partner of Gulder Ultimate Search 10.

He says, “I feel very happy to be the first winner of the first GUS Fans’ Edition; the first ‘Ultimate Conqueror’. It is a dream come true. My friends started calling me Ultimate Conqueror when I told them I was coming for the search. I took the risk of a night journey to get here for the search and it was very stressful. I can’t explain how I feel right now.”

A statement from the organizers gives details of the last scene of the competition. According to them, on the final day of the search, the warriors got a message from the ‘Council of Elders’ ordering them to pack their bags and make their ways to where they draw water.

“Chidi awaited them and gave them the next set of instructions.

The final task was to search for the 10th symbol.

To do that, each of them would make use of a clue which would take them to two different locations to retrieve two pieces of the m ap that would lead to where the 10th symbol was buried. Another clue at their first locations would direct them to the next location. It was a race against time and the last man to the next location was evicted.

“After many futile efforts Daniel eventually dug up the sceptre from under a slant palm tree in the river and thereby ended the long search for the 10th symbol.

“He was instantly inducted into the Order of Heroes as the 10th Ultimate Man by Chidi Mokeme, the anchor-man.”

I did no wrong - Stella Oduah faces House Committee hearing over car scandal

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Embattled Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah today faced House Committee Hearing over the BMW car scandal.

FOR the first time since the N255m bulletproof cars purchase scandal broke out, the woman at the centre of it all defended her integrity yesterday.
Minister of Aviation Stella Oduah told the House Committee on Aviation that she did no wrong.
She said her approval of the purchase in no way meant that she encouraged the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) not to follow due process.
According to her, in approving the purchase, she had told the NCAA to “ do the needful”. The “needful”, according to Ms Oduah, meant they should follow due process.
The minister not only defended herself at the session, but went a step further to stick her neck out for the NCAA.
Oduah, who read a prepared speech, spoke on the allegations against her. She said: “In the last few weeks, I have received all sorts of bashings in the media. Many persons have also risen to my defence. Many have abused me, some out of a genuine sense of outrage that I allegedly spent the sum of USD1.6 million of government funds to purchase for myself two nos bulletproof BMW cars for my personal use.
“Honourable Chairman, as you are all aware, what necessitated this public hearing were the events that followed a false and malicious online publication that I had compelled the NCAA to purchase for me 2 nos BMW bulletproof cars at the cost of USD1.6 Million. Let me state emphatically from the onset that the allegation concerning the purchase of 2 nos bulletproof cars for me by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is false in its entirety.
“Sadly, other than the conjecture, the publication has not supported this inflammatory statement with any rational basis. As a matter of fact, their justification and confirmation, which they brandish, is nothing but the erroneous responses of my aides.”
The long wait for the minister by the committee for her to state her side of the controversial purchase ended when Ms Oduah walked into the Conference Room 231 at 11:39 a.m.
The Nkiruka Onyejeocha- headed committee extended the hearing by a day to enable her return from an official journey and tender her position before the lawmakers.
Oduah came into the hall wearing a sober mien. She spotted a navy blue batik material with her usual head gear and glittering jewellry.
All through the event, she tried maintaining a quiet and purposeful approach to the issues she explained, but got agitated a few times in response to questions.
No sooner had Oduah arrived the venue when she immediately stepped out for about 10 minutes to confer with her aides and consultants near the elevators, where they gave her documents and injury-time guidance on what to say and how to comport herself.
Oduah was emphatic that the NCAA did not spend monies not approved by the Appropriation Act, 2013.
She said: “The NCAA, as a result of the daily interaction with the law in its regulatory and enforcement roles, is at all times and in all matters conscious of its obligations of complying with the law and all extant rules and regulations of the government.
“The NCAA is, therefore, conscious of its obligations relating in particular to appropriation and will never spend monies that have not been appropriated by the National Assembly.
“It is in this regard, therefore, that the NCAA, within the framework of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) approved by the National Assembly as a planning tool, planned its budget with regard to acquisition of operational and other security and safety vehicles for the next three years in a manner compliant with Section 80 (4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as Amended), that prohibits the spending of monies from any fund of the Federation, except as appropriated by the National Assembly.”
The minister said that the media had been awash with the purported spending of monies by the NCAA to the tune of USD1.6 million, N255 million and other figures on the purchase of the vehicles.
“It is not true that the NCAA has spent such amount of money on purchase of vehicles. It is also not true that the NCAA has purchased two bullet proof BMW vehicles for the Honourable Minister of Aviation,” Oduah said.
She said her understanding of what the NCAA did was to plan for the acquisition of vehicles for next three years within the MTEF through a lease financing arrangement with First Bank Plc.
“Under this arrangement, NCAA would have paid N100 million by the end of fiscal year 2013. The sum is below the appropriated amount of N240 million and less than what is required for FEC approval.
“It would appear that what the NCAA has done within the framework of the MTEF and its desire to be prudent is to plan its budget in a manner that the cash flow of the authority is able to accommodate spending.”
Justifying the lease financing of the 2 BMW cars, Oduah said: “The NCAA owes its very existence to the benevolence and wisdom of the National Assembly expressed through the promulgation of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Act, 2006.
“As the regulator of the entire aviation industry, the NCAA, pursuant to powers granted under the Civil Aviation Act, 2006 makes and enforces Regulations towards ensuring safety and security of Nigeria’s airspace.
“The NCAA in addition, plays a pivotal role in carrying out Nigeria’s international obligations and responsibilities. Our role in the Ministry and under the law is what I have carried out which is to support this from a policy and execution standpoint only.”
She added that the two armoured cars were necessary for safety and security in the operations of the NCAA and should not be linked with her name.
“Nothing in the approved budget reflected my name. I never asked for any vehicle. It is not registered in my name, but of the NCAA and First Bank
All I did was to approve the requests.”
Oduah insisted that the NCAA went through due process as there were no guidelines by the Bureau of Public Procurement on auto lease financing.
“We have always acted in a prudent manner,” she concluded.
But the members of the Committee were not satisfied with her explanations. A member. Zakari Mohammed, wanted the Minister to be definite on if what the NCAA did was auto loan or auto lease financing.
“Loan agreement is different from a lease agreement; is it a loan or lease agreement? First Bank said it is an auto loan. I’m aware there is a procurement law, Clause 16(13). The threshold is N100 million. N255 million exceeds your threshold. What laws did you rely on? Is there any law empowering you to approve above a N100m? Is there any law you’re depending on that gave you the power to do that?”
Oduah insisted that from the way the payment of the lease financing was structured, she did not pass her threshold. According to her, there was no difference between loans and lease agreement.
“The dynamics of the auto loans agreement and lease agreement is still the same,” she said. This caused further disagreement.
Another member, Jerry Manwe, told the minister that there was mischief in the action of the NCAA, adding that the National Assembly never approved of the purchase of armoured or bulletproof cars, but that rather, the N240 million in the NCAA budget was for operational and security cars.
He added: “If you’re quoting MTEF, and at the end of this loan
NCAA would have paid close to a billion over three years, Which MTEF provides to that? Also, First Bank said that at the end of this year you would pay N160m on the lease; is this not above your threshold?
“This committee rejected armoured vehicle for the patrol of perimeter fence, do you need bullet-proof cars to patrol perimeter fences?”
On accusation of not following due process in her approval, Oduah said: “I said approved, but do the needful- what does the needful mean? When I said ‘do the needful’, I meant you should go through the process
The intent of the memo is approval for implementation. The minister approves for implementation. The annex (attached to her documents) says approved for implementation and for the memo to be implemented, it must go through due process.”
Oduah argued that “security vehicles” means armoured and bulletproof cars. She, however, added: “The deal of N643 million is a mere understanding, which can be called off. Expression of interest was to 22 banks.”
The chairman of the committee interjected: “Approved, do the needful…NCAA, when the minister said ‘approved’, do the needful, what did you do?”
The DG NCAA, Fola Akinkotu, parried the question. He said: “Do the needful? As I said earlier, the officer, who was in charge of it at that time, will explain. But as a DG, what I would so is to follow due process, but when the Acting DG (who had gone to the toilet at the time) comes back, he would explain.”
Permanent Secretary, George Ossi, said: “Actually when the memo came to the Minister for approval she expected that the agency would have complied with due process. The due diligence is expected to be done by the agency because this is their project, the Permanent Secretary is just to convey. I, as the PS was not available at this time. I am not trying to shift the blame, DG is the accounting officer. The DG is expected to do due diligence after the minister’s approval.”
When the Acting DG, Mkemakolon, returned, he was put on oath. He said: “I went out to ease myself. I just came in. When we got the approval and that we should do the needful, we assumed that means that the agency should go through due process.
“We went through processes…going to the banks, suppliers etc were processes. We were of the mindset that we’ve already gotten the approval of the National Assembly.”
The President of Coscharis, Cosmas Maduka, caused a stir in his response to queries on the mix-up in the chassis numbers of the vehicles. In an agitated voice he said: “Look, let me tell you, we don’t do monkey business. We have given you the documents, you can call the manufacturers.”
Mrs. Onyejeocha intervened: “Oga (to Coscharis), Oga listen, please, sit down and drink some water. Take it easy.”
In her opening speech, Mrs. Onyejeocha told the minister that the House mandated the committee to investigate the purchase of the cars, “ find out if the cars were actually purchased; If it was authorised in an appropriation law; If NCAA has been complying with the Fiscal Responsibility Act on the Internally Generated Revenue and if the minister is entitled to to the use of such cars.”

Jonathan to present 2014 budget, November 12
Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday wrote the Senate seeking for approval to present the 2014 Appropriation Bill to the joint session of the National Assembly on November 12, 2013.
The President presented the 2013 budget of N4.9 trillion to the joint session of the National Assembly on October 10th 2012.
Jonathan in a letter titled “2014 budget” dated October 23, 2013 requested the lawmakers to grant him Tuesday 12th November to enable him formally present the 2014 budget.
The letter read in part, “I write to crave your indulgence to grant me the slot of 12 noon on Tuesday, 12th November 2013 to enable me formally address a joint session of the National Assembly on the 2014 budget.”
Senate President, David Mark, read the Presidential letter on the floor of the upper chamber yesterday.
Some Senators noted however that the Senate could only grant the 12 November date for the presentation of the budget if the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) is adopted and passed by the two chambers of the National Assembly.

14-year-old boy rapes 9-year-old girl to death

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The police in Lagos State have commenced investigation into how a nine-year-old girl died, after sustaining injuries caused by alleged consistent rape. According to police authorities, the deceased was raped over five times, by a 14-year-old student, Onyi Adimabua, in the Ikorodu area of the state. The father of the deceased, Simeon Jigo, told Punch Metro that Onyi is the son of the proprietor of the school his daughter attended. He said his daughter opened up about the rape when she started having medical problems. The 77-year-old man said his daughter died on October 3, 2013.He said,

“Up until my daughter’s death, she was a pupil of Fulfilled Greenland School, Ikorodu, and she was in primary three. One day, she came home and started complaining of pains around her vagina, stomach area. We rushed her to Ikorodu General Hospital.“A doctor checked her and after conducting some tests on her, told us that my daughter had sustained medical complications due to forced sexual intercourse. I was alarmed by this; so, I had a private discussion with my daughter.“She told me that it was her school proprietor’s son, Onyi, that had been raping her. The boy had threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone about it.”

The indigene of Ondo State told PUNCH Metro that after initial treatments, he took his daughter to Arogbo in Ondo State to be taken care of but her condition continued to deteriorate.A few days after the troubled father travelled to Ondo State, Onyi, accompanied by his parents, also travelled to Ondo State, to apologise to Jigo’s family. The girl, however, was said to have died that very day.
“On getting to the house where my daughter was, we discovered that she was dead. Onyi confessed that he had been raping my daughter prior to her death,’ Jigo said.
PUNCH Metro learnt that after the girl’s demise, irate youths in the area attempted to lynch the 14-year-old boy.The bereaved father was said to have intervened and reported the matter to a nearby police station, where the teenager was held for safe keeping. The next morning, Onyi and his parents travelled back to Lagos. The alleged rapist’s parents, in company with a chief in Ikorodu, reportedly visited Jigo when he returned to Lagos. The group were said to have pleaded that the bereaved father should not pursue the case but he refused.Jigo said,
“I went to the Ikorodu Police station to report the case but was surprised when the policemen on duty said I should not write any statement.  They only told me to write down my telephone number and said they would call me later.“After waiting for many days without any call, I wrote a petition and the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.”
It was however learnt that Onyi had been taken to his father’s hometown in Delta State thereby stalling police investigation. The teenager’s parents,  however described the incident as the handiwork of the devil. The 14-year-old boy’s father, Andrew Adimabua, said,
“I trained that boy in the way of the Lord and expected so much from him. He has confessed to the act; there is nothing to hide. He told me that he learnt about sex by watching blue (pornographic) films.“We are not hiding him and we will cooperate with the police. On the day the little girl died, he was beaten up and made to stay in the rain for hours. As a result, he contracted pneumonia so we sent him home for treatment. When he recovers, he’ll be taken to the police for questioning.”
Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, expressed shock at the development.Braide said Onyi would be re-arrested in the course of investigation.“It is appalling that a teenager could indulge in such act. The matter is under investigation and the culprit will be re-arrested.”

Enugu First Lady accuses Governor Chime of treating her like a slave

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The First Lady of Enugu State, Clara Chime has cried out to human rights bodies to save her from the brutal hands of Governor Sullivan Chime, whom she has accused of treating her like a slave. The First Lady in an emotion-laden letter obtained by SaharaReporters disclosed that since she got married to the governor, sometime in October 2008, she had never enjoyed her marriage and has been denied of her matrimonial rights. She claimed that since she moved into Chime’s house, they have never slept on the same bed.
Clara in the letter also alleged that she has been introduced to two psychiatrists whom she identified as Dr. Onwukwe and Dr. Agumo, and they prescribed
“all kinds of drugs that end up keeping me acute depressed and also drives me into hallucinations."
The mother of one also complained that she no longer have access to the real world and all that makes her happy, because of the side effects of the drugs she is taking, adding that she has been put under house arrest for committing no crime.
According to her, efforts made by President Goodluck Jonathan, the First Lady, Patience and the Catholic Bishop of Enugu state, Callistus Onaga to resolve the matter were futile.
“My father is late, my Mum and few of my siblings are confused and have done all kinds of prayers they know of. 3 of my siblings prefer me dead than to see me leave the Government House. He treats my Mum and my siblings bad,” she claimed.
A visibly depressed Clara further alleged that Governor Chime has ordered her to leave the Government House with her four-year-old son whom she conceived before their marriage. She further disclosed that the governor, later threatened to disown his own son, should she leave with him.
“He has told everyone he can reach that there is no marriage between us and that I can leave if I wish to, but whenever I plan to leave, he instructs them to lock me in. I have told him through SMS that I will leave my son behind, but still, he has instructed his securities to lock me inside the house.”“He does not take care of me personally. The government gives me allowance to run the house and that’s where I save little from to take care of myself, my Mum and few of my siblings,” she said in the letter.
He shut me out of his life years ago; I don’t have access to his apartment. The problem is enormous; I don’t know where to start to explain from.”“Police and SS men have been instructed by Barr. Sullivan Chime to confine me in a place for a long time now against my wish [but] it is my wish to leave these premises,” she said, begging, “Please assist me to reach to the human rights and say to them to please come hastily and release me,” she lamented.
A competent source at the Government House has further disclosed that, the problem could be dated back to September 2011 when the governor allegedly impregnated his sister-in-law, Ebere Igwe, Clara’s younger sister. The executive romance between Chime and his sister-in-law reportedly produced a baby boy.The source said that the affair between Governor Chime and Ebere, started shortly after he married Clara in October 2008.The made in heaven traditional marriage between Chime and Clara held at Isuochi, Clara’s home town after the former divorced his first wife from Ogakwu family in Udi town, his country home, an allegation the state government has refuted.

Another plane crash averted in Abuja

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

Another air disaster was averted at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport, Abuja on Monday as a Med-View Airlines aircraft from Lagos suddenly took to the air again at the point of landing in Abuja. The pilot told the passengers that he took to the air again to avoid a collision with another aircraft on the tarmac. The airline Flight VL2104 took off from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos at noon and was scheduled to land in Abuja at about 1.05pm.The pilot had already announced final descent into Abuja and asked all passengers and cabin crew to fasten their seat belts but the pilot suddenly took off to the air again with barely 30 seconds to touch ground. The plane had 150 passengers on board.

After about three minutes of gaining altitude, the pilot announced that he decided to take off again to avoid colliding with an aircraft that was on ground. He said that after he had been granted clearance to land, it was later discovered that the other aircraft was not fast enough, hence his decision to take off.The aircraft hovered for another 20 minutes in the air before finally landing at about 1.30pm.While the drama lasted, the passengers were panic-stricken, especially when the plane entered into turbulent weather on air.

The incident came less than a month after an Embraer aircraft operated by Associated Airlines with registration number SCD 361, conveying the corpse of a former Governor of Ondo State, Chief Olusegun Agagu, from Lagos to Akure for burial, crashed on October 3 shortly after take-off at Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos.Thirteen passengers in the crashed plane were killed, including a commissioner in Ondo State, Deji Falae.
